His admirers included many from all walks of American society and included American celebrities such as Jack Nicholson, Steven Spielberg, Robert Redford, Chevy Chase, Oliver Stone, and Kevin Costner. He met Yuri Gagarin in 1961 in Havana and the picture of both became one of the most famous of Castro’s pictures.

He was a staunch opponent of LGBT rights in Cuba but later expressed regret over the government’s persecution of homosexuals and cultural dissenters with imprisonment and “reeducation” in the 60’s. His own niece Mariela Castro is an LGBT activist and is currently fighting for lesbian rights in Cuba.
He preferred fatigues as style of clothes though later on he changed into more comfortable attire. He was fond of sports brand Adidas and wore Adidas jackets in political meetings also.
He was very close to controversial Venezuelan politician Hugo Chavez who served as the 64th President of Venezuela from 1999 to 2013. Chavez died in March 2013 in Cuba where he was being treated for cancer.
