The first two cartoons did not have a sound track and were silent films.

It could not find any distributor. Disney created the third cartoon with sound track and called Steamboat Willie. Walt gave his voice for Mickey and the cartoon became an instant hit.

In 1929 Disney created more characters which included Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto.

Flowers and Trees, was the first cartoon which was created in color and also won an Oscar.

In 1933, when the US was in the grips of its worst economic crisis, the great depression, The Three Little Pigs and the title song “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?” became a theme for the country.

The first full length animated film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was released on December 21, 1937 and at the height of the Great Depression managed a business of $1.499 million.

This was followed by a series of full length animated feature films which included Fantasia, Pinocchio, Bambi and Dumbo.

A swanky new campus for Walt Disney Studios was opened in Burbank in 1939.

However trouble erupted in 1941 with many Disney animators going on a strike.

Many employees would resign and it will be years before Disney studios fully recovered.
