He renounced the German citizenship to avoid military service.

Einstein graduated in 1900, and spent 2 years searching for a teaching post.

In 1902, Einstein’s was financially unstable. He didn’t have a job; his father’s company was bankrupt. He then started tutoring children.

Einstein had an illegitimate child with a fellow student Mileva Marica, before they got married. But the child died one year after her birth in 1903 because of an infection.

Einstein then got a Swiss Clerical job after a recommendation from Marcel Grossman’s father. Marcel was Einstein’s lifelong friend.

1905 was the most successful year in Einstein’s life because he published 4 papers during this year. He was just 26 years old and worked during the day at a patent office.

Einstein had to work as patent clerk for almost a decade because he couldn’t get a job in academics. Although his professors knew him to be brilliant, they also knew that he was unruly and rebellious which prevented them to recommend him for various positions.

Einstein worked at the patent office until 1909, when he found a fulltime academic post at the University of Zurich.

Einstein regained German citizenship when he entered the German civil service, among the other things as full member of the Prussian Academy of Services (1914-33) and a professor at the University of Berlin(1914-17)

Einstein was made director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Physics(1917-33).
